Historian to lead Tahlequah tour

— TAHLEQUAH — See why Tahlequah is known as a city of firsts with “Tour Historic Tahlequah: A City of Firsts” on Saturday. The tour will be led by well-known historian Beth Herrington.

The tour will begin at 10 a.m. at the Thompson House at 300 S. College Ave. in Tahlequah and will last approximately two hours.

Sites to visit include Cherokee Capitol Square in downtown Tahlequah, historic Worcester Cemetery, chiefs’ row at Tahlequah City Cemetery, the Thompson House, Leoser Cabin, the Original Townsite Historic District and more.

During the tour, participants will also learn about early Tahlequah families and their roles in the growth of the city, the influence of missionaries and how they contributed to education, and about the city’s many firsts.

“This tour will be an excellent way to learn more about Tahlequah, and Beth Herrington has a way of making history come alive so in addition to being educational, it is entertaining,” Kate Kelly, tourism director with the Tahlequah Area Chamber of Commerce, said in a media release.

Herrington, a retired educator, is renowned for her knowledge of Tahlequah’s history and how it shaped Tahlequah as it is now.

Cost of the tour is $15 per person. Reservations are required. Space is limited.
