Rock hounds can find many ways to appreciate rocks, minerals and fossils at the annual Tahlequah Rock & Mineral Show.
This year’s show features 26 vendors from six states, bringing a wide variety of material and expertise. The show runs from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Tahlequah Community Building, 300 W. First St.
“You can always find someone to answer your questions and identify your rocks,” spokeswoman Sara Brasel said in a media release. “We have everything from the more primitive, such as flintknapping, to faceted gemstones. Rocks and minerals have many practical uses in this world, but few things compare with their beauty.”
A live auction is set for 7 p.m. tonight, with door prizes to be given away. A silent auction with more door prizes will take place Saturday. In addition to rocks, minerals, fossils, handmade jewelry and jewelry making items, there will be demonstrations and displays for educational purposes.
Elsing Museum from Oral Roberts University will have some new items in their display, and the Oklahoma Mines will be featured Friday to educate and entertain.
The show also features a snack bar and children’s activities.
Children always have fun in their area with a Gem Dig, Treasure Hunt, and Plinko,” Brasel said.
Admission is $3. Children are free.
Funds raised will go into a scholarship fund, some of which will soon go to purchase Earth science material for elementary schools, the release states.
