The American Cancer Society is seeking teams for the Relay for Life of Muskogee County.
An informational meeting will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the new Oklahoma Farm Bureau Building, 28 E. Shawnee, across from the Kmart parking lot, to share with community members the importance of Relay for Life and its impact on the fight against cancer.
Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society’s national signature, overnight fundraising activity. Teams of eight to 15 members gather with tents and sleeping bags to participate in the largest fundraising walk in the nation, according to a media release. Relay for Life unites friends, families, businesses, hospitals, schools and churches . . . people from all walks of life. Teams seek sponsorship prior to the relay, all with the goal of supporting a cure for cancer.
Teams are encouraged to sign up early for this year’s event. Relay for life is celebrating its 25th year. The overnight camp out for Muskogee County will be June 5 in the evening through the morning of June 6 at Muskogee Civic Center.
“By organizing early, teams have more time to raise money for the American Cancer Society,” said Maranda Figueroa, community manager. “About 60 percent of the donations raised come right back here to Muskogee County through a variety of programs.”
Relay for Life is a fun-filled, overnight event that mobilizes communities throughout the country to celebrate survivors, remember loved ones, and empower others to fight back against a disease that takes too much, said Elisa Ortiz, event chairperson.
