Legal historian to speak at the library

Rennard Strickland noted legal scholar and astute historian will return to his hometown to present a lecture at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Muskogee Public Library.

He is Dean and Phillip H. Knight Professor Law at the University of Oregon School of Law. Growing up in Muskogee he attended Muskogee Public Schools, received his B.A. from Northeastern State College, his J.D. from the University of Virginia, his M.A. from the University of Arkansas, and his S.J.D. from the University of Virginia. Dean Strickland is author or editor of more than 30 books including “Tonto’s Revenge,” in which he examines America's previous attempt at genocide toward American Indians, he goes on to examine the American Indian's identity and culture.

In his book, he argues the premise that “values must prevail over technology.” The book is an excellent collection of essays told with a voice of passion, clarity, and confidence that spirituality will emerge to insure a balanced and peaceful future for generations to come. Another book eloquently addressing what Faulkner described as the “enduring spirit of man” is Dean Strickland’s “Fire and the Spirits” wherein he follows the Cherokee people’s development of ancient spirit decrees to the fusion of their tribal law ways with Anglo-American law.

Another of his books on the shelves at the library is “The Indians of Oklahoma” a product of the Oklahoma Image project sponsored by the Oklahoma Department of Libraries and funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities. The book is one from the “Newcomers to a New Land” series which served as the format for the “We Call Oklahoma Home” eight week Centennial lecture program. Dean Strickland’s program will be the final program of the eight week lecture series which recognizes the wonderful diversity of our state in its Centennial year. The public is invited to attend.
