Benny Green will perform with Northeastern State University’s acclaimed Jazz Ensemble in the second concert of NSU’s 2012-13 Green Country Jazz Series.
The ensemble performs with Green at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the NSU Jazz Lab in Tahlequah. He will also lead a jazz masterclass at the Jazz Lab beginning at 2 p.m. with bassist Lynn Seaton and drummer Jared Johnson.
“He’s definitely one of the most exciting hard bop pianists around — by his mid-20s, he was already working with Art Blakey and Freddie Hubbard,” Dr. Tommy Poole, NSU’s director of jazz studies, said in a media release.
Green’s 2003 CD release, “Jazz at the Bistro,” featured Green alongside legendary guitarist Russell Malone. The Los Angeles Times called the recording “an electric fusing of complementary styles,” and “a musical tete-a-tete between two of the jazz world’s most gifted contemporary artists.”
The Jazz Lab is at 315 N. Muskogee Ave. in Tahlequah. Tickets to the concert are $5. Admission to the 2 p.m. masterclass is free.
