Porum Landing receives grant from G-P program

— The Georgia-Pacific Bucket Brigade grant program awarded the Porum Landing Fire Protection Association $10,000 Tuesday as one of 25 fire units across the country to receive a grant.

“Georgia-Pacific is proud to present the Porum Landing Fire Protection Association with this award,” Rodney Bond, plant manager for the Georgia-Pacific Muskogee facility, said in a media release. “It will not only help purchase much needed equipment to keep our area safe, but it also demonstrates our appreciation for all they do. In many cases, this unit is a first responder in an emergency and we honor their commitment to serve.”

Bond said he is especially pleased that the grant is being awarded to a volunteer fire department that includes two Georgia-Pacific employees — Cathy Hutchinson and Trish Ledyard.

The sisters are Georgia-Pacific employees who live in the Porum area. Ledyard also serves on the mill’s Emergency Response Team.

Since 2006, the Bucket Brigade program has supported local fire departments in Georgia-Pacific facility communities through more than $1 million in contributions.

Fire Chief Dean Wilborn said the grant was much needed and is grateful to once again be a recipient of the award. He said the department received the grant several years ago and the funds were used to purchase “jaws of life” at that time.

The Georgia-Pacific Bucket Brigade program is meeting critical needs particularly for fire departments in small and rural communities with a large volunteer base.

In fact, of the 1 million firefighters in the United States, 70 percent are volunteers, according to the National Volunteer Fire Council and the National Fire Protection Association.
