September is Library Card Sign-up Month, and the Muskogee Public Library wants to make sure all children in Muskogee have the smartest card of all — a library card.
Public library programming and books for children make a difference in the lives of students, said Rhonda Lee, library assistant. By providing school-age children with engaging programs and amazing collections, students from all backgrounds become excited and enthusiastic readers, she said.
Activities at the Muskogee Public Library during Library Card Sign-up month include:
• Wild Whims story and art with Maria Mannon at 4:15 p.m. Tuesdays.
• Guitar lesson with Selby Minner at 5 p.m. Thursdays.
• “Mango Monday,” Sept. 13, drop in from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to learn about the newest language database.
“A library card has always been the most important school supply of all,” said Jan Bryant, head librarian. “Today’s libraries are thriving technology hubs that millions rely on as either their first or only choice for computer and Internet access. In doing so, libraries provide children with not only the tools to be literate, but information literate as well. There’s a lot happening at Muskogee Public Library, and the best part for both children and parents — in these though economic times - is that it’s all free with a library card.”
Getting a library card is easy. Children under 18 must have a parent or guardian sign them up for a card. Bring something with your current address such as an ID or a piece of mail such as a water bill.
Observed since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month is a time when the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country remind parents that a library card is the most important school supply of all.
For more information on how to sign up for a library card, visit the Muskogee Public Library at 801 W. Okmulgee Ave., call 682-6657 or visit the library online at http://www.eok.lib.ok.us/.
