The Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame’s songwriter showcase “Music Begins With A Song” series resumes at 7:30 p.m. Thursday when Leigh Ann Matthews, Joel Melton, and Jubal Lee Young will perform.
Now in its third year, the “Music Begins With A Song” series showcases songwriters from the state. Artists generally perform solo, presenting original material. Admission is $5 per person.
“The songwriter is one of the unsung heroes of the music business” event host Greg Jacobs said in a media release. “Hearing the songwriter describe the song from the writer’s perspective adds to the entertainment value of the performance.”
Young, son of legendary songwriter Steve Young (“Seven Bridges Road” and “Lonesome, On’ry and Mean”) hails from Nashville, Tenn., but now makes his home in Muskogee. His performance style has been described as “outlaw/southern rock.”
Melton was raised in Checotah but now resides in Austin, Texas. Joel is an accomplished composer, screenplay writer, and performer in addition to his songwriting skills.
Matthews is a Muskogee resident, performing original and cowboy songs all over the country with her husband Scott.
Jacobs is one of the original “Red Dirt” musicians who migrated to Stillwater in the 1970s along with Jimmy LaFave, Tom Skinner, and the Red Dirt Rangers. His songwriting is historical and personal, presented in a laid-back style that makes him a true “Red Dirt Troubadour”.
The Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
“We are truly blessed that musicians with ties to Oklahoma continue to enthusiastically answer our calls to help support the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame,” said Jim Blair, president of the OMHOF board. “We need the community and music fans across the state to join this effort to help sustain our mission to celebrate our Oklahoma musicians and the profound influence they have on our lives.”
