Betz to speak about Middle East at MPL program

— The 2013 Great Decisions program begins its 38th year at the Muskogee Public Library on Tuesday with Don Betz, president of the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond. Betz, an expert on the Middle East, will speak on the topic “Egypt.”

There have been numerous changes in the Middle East since a revolution ousted President Hosni Mubarak in 2011. According to an Egyptian newspaper,  “many promises remain unfulfilled and the population is still bitterly divided” despite the revolution that brought democracy to the county.

Betz worked with the United Nations on Middle East issues from 1982 through 2003. He served as provost and vice president for academic affairs at Palmer College in Davenport, Iowa, from 1994 to 1999.

Betz became the 17th president of Northeastern State University in Tahlequah in 2008.

He served in various capacities at Northeastern for 23 years including executive director of the educational foundation, assistant to the president, dean of continuing education and special programs, director of the Sequoyah Institute/Center for Tribal Studies, the founder and adviser of the university’s President’s Leadership Class and its Model United Nations program.

Betz spoke at the first Great Decisions program at Muskogee Public Library in 1976.

The program begins at 7 p.m. in the Grant Foreman meeting room at Muskogee Public Library, a branch of the Eastern Oklahoma District Library System.

It is funded by the Muskogee Public Library’s Hultquist Trust. All programs in the series are free and open to all area residents
