The 2013 Eastern Oklahoma Veteran & Military Hiring Fair & Business Opportunity Summit will be held Feb. 7 at the Muskogee Civic Center. Doors open at 9 a.m. for veterans and 10 a.m. for the general public. Admission is free.
The primary purpose of this job fair is to assist veterans and military personnel in obtaining gainful employment and to inform veteran and military business owners of available resources and opportunities, such as federal contracts, loans and grants. Local, state and federal agencies will collaborate for a common objective; provide Oklahoma veterans and military personnel with resources that could improve quality of life as well as sustaining employment options.
During the event, workshop sessions will be scheduled to serve veterans and the businesses they own or work for.
Federal agencies including Marshals Service, Customs and Border Protection, the Department of Homeland Security, the Census Bureau, as well as health care organizations and small businesses from northeast Oklahoma will visit to assess employment candidates.
The Department of Labor reports more than 1.1 million unemployed veterans, a quarter million of whom are Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, with unemployment rates of 30.2 percent for age 24-under and 17.9 percent for ages 25-34.
