Older worker gets essential training, new job through Experience Works

Experience Works recently celebrated National Older Workers Week by looking back at a participant who through training became employed and is one of the many older workers who continue to be a vital resource in the workforce, according to a media release.

Jimmy Samuels loves to, as he puts it, tinker with cars, fish and hunt when time allows. Samuels moved back to Oklahoma seven years ago to take care of his mother. After weeks of not finding a job, Samuels contacted Experience Works.

After meeting with Samuels, Experience Works enrolled him in job skills training and the rest is history.

“I wouldn’t be able to have made it without Experience Works,” Samuels said in a media release. “There are just no words good enough to say how much Experience Works has done for me. Because of Experience Works I got a full-time job with Muskogee County Head Start, and for this I am very grateful.”

According to the release, since 1968, Experience Works, formerly Green Thumb, has been serving Oklahoma’s older workers and communities. The Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP), serves low-income individuals 55 years of age and older and provides them with the training, experience, supportive services and information they need to improve their lives, gain self-sufficiency, realize their goals, obtain regular employment, and meet the needs of a demand-driven workforce.

The unique feature of the SCSEP is community service. Older workers are assigned to community based agencies where they provide about 20 hour a week of services, for which they earn the minimum wage. During this time they learn new skills to apply in a work setting while making significant contributions to their community by performing duties that would otherwise not be done at the agency.
