Hot competition expected at Eufaula’s Whole Hawg Days

Some of the hottest competition at this weekend’s Whole Hawg Days pork sandwich cook-off could come from a doughnut shop.

LeAnn’s Daylight Donuts won the cook-off in 2011 and plans another entry in this year’s cook-off.

The cook-off and a free sandwich giveaway highlight three days of Whole Hawg festivities in Eufaula. The festival started Thursday with a carnival and Round-up Club rodeos.

This weekend’s activities include an arts and crafts festival, downtown parade, car show and a Lake Eufaula poker run.

Temperatures hovering around 100 degrees aren’t likely to scare crowds away from the festival, said Jimmie Phelan, executive director of the Eufaula Chamber of Commerce.

Thousands showed up at last year’s festival, when temperatures rose above 100, Phelan said.

“A lot of people stayed in town the weekend and sat under the trees,” Phelan said “I heard we had right at 15,000 come through town during the festival.”

Many come for the free barbecue, she said. The free hawg sandwich giveaway will be 5 p.m. Saturday.

Phelan said she expects about 25 to 30 entries in the cook-off.

Entrants will spend most of the day Saturday cooking the pork on their smokers.

LeAnn Wilson said she starts the cooker “real early” in the morning on Whole Hawg Day.

Wilson said her entry will be smoked in front of her husband’s shop next to the doughnut shop. She said her husband, Danny Wilson, is a welder and built the cooker out of an old propane tank.

“I really don’t use anything special, just a regular old rub put together when I get there,” LeAnn Wilson said.

LeAnn’s Daylight Donuts won the 2011 cook-off with the Goose Poop Yacht Club. Wilson said the club is named for Goose Poop Island on the lake.

“The money we won last year went to the animal shelter,” she said.

Non-pork related activities include an arts and crafts festival and inflatables at Posey Park. Phelan said the inflatable attractions replace the carnival and will feature water slides and other activities for kids.

A parade down Main Street at 6 p.m. today, will feature all sorts of entries, said Jay Hunn.

“We’ll have Shriners, the Tractor Club, old cars, the Rags to Riches Old Car Club,” he said. “It seems like it gets bigger every year. Everyone just loves it.”

The Poker Run begins at 7 a.m. Saturday, but people can enter as late as noon at any of the four participating marinas — Eufaula Cove, Belle Starr, Evergreen and No. 9 Marina, Phelan said.

She said she’s hoping for 500 entries this year. Entrants go to four different marinas on the lake to pick up cards. The best hand gets $20,000; second best gets $7,500.
