Oklahoma is almost synonymous with violent weather. It’s always been that way.
So it’s surprising that some schools, according to a recent Phoenix story, are just now trying to construct safe rooms.
The recent story recounted the efforts of some area districts to obtain federal funding to build shelters that would protect children from tornadoes. Administrators said that federal grant funding was easier to obtain if a disaster had occurred in the area previously.
That’s fine if schools can obtain the funding, but it seems to make sense that if districts are concerned about storms threatening their children that they build safe rooms however they can. Just do it.
Why wait until after a disaster strikes?
