Fine texters if they violate traffic laws

State Senators recently passed a bill that would fine drivers who violate traffic laws if they are determined to have been using a cell phone to send text messages.

The bill would allow a $100 fine. It would exempt medical emergencies.

This bill targets a specific problem. The problem will only get worse if there is no strong deterrent waiting for those who text and drive.

Text messaging is the most dangerous form of electronic communication in a moving vehicle. Most texters use two hands and certainly look to see if the message they are typing is correct.

It is nearly impossible to text and maintain anything close to the safe operation of a moving vehicle.
