Don’t expect state Rep. Sally Kern to apologize. She would rather be pharisaic than polite.
Kern, R-Oklahoma City, went on a rant at a Republican function recently, claiming that the homosexual agenda is destroying the nation and that “it’s the biggest threat our nation has, even more so than terrorism or Islam.”
Friday, an edited version of her talk went online, which by Monday, led various groups to call for an apology. Of course, most of them were from gay and lesbian groups. Kern says she has received thousands of e-mails critical of her remarks.
But what else would she expect?
Kern accused people whose lifestyle she doesn’t agree with of being the kind of people who fly airplanes into buildings.
Kern says she was only referring to those who promote a homosexual lifestyle, but Kern has been outspoken in the past about her feelings toward gays. She simply continues to spout the venom she feels toward a particular group of people.
No one says Kern has to agree with the homosexual lifestyle. But as an elected official, she should be able to discuss it without making absurd comments. Of course, she’s oblivious to the cruel and antagonizing nature of her remarks.
But Oklahomans should not elect people to office who don’t have better sense than to handle their prejudices in more constructive and less threatening ways.
