State, cyclists share in improving safety

Bicycling groups across the state say they support a legislative package designed to protect riders and motorists.

Many say the state should do more to educate residents and enforce existing laws.

We agree the state should do more to encourage safety for cyclists and, in turn, for motorists.

A recent state story reported the League of American Bicyclists ranks Oklahoma the 44th most friendly bicycle state.

Kevin Mussett, president of the Oklahoma Bicycling Coalition, said any legislative change that clarifies laws, helps law enforcement better understand the rules or creates more attention for the issue is a big step forward.

We believe some of the responsibility for safety falls on the cyclists.

If more cyclists understood current laws and obeyed them at all times, they would be safer and drivers would be more confident when approaching cyclists.

The state should do more to educate motorists, but cyclists must do their part, too.
