Eugene Smith, night production supervisor at the Muskogee Phoenix, retired December 30, 2011, after working more than 44 years at the paper.
He was the longest-term employee at the Phoenix.
Eugene learned his craft in the print shop at Muskogee’s Central High School.
After graduating in 1967, he was hired at the Phoenix.
At the time, there was a morning edition and an afternoon edition.
For the first year Smith worked the day shift, putting out the evening paper. When it ceased production, he moved to the night shift, where he finished his career.
Eugene was a hard-working, loyal employee — a true one-of-a-kind.
In 2009, he was voted the Phoenix’s “Unsung Hero,” earning the recognition for the exceptional professionalism he brought to his job every day.
Eugene and his wife, Beverly, have three children; Kim Hall, Christie Young and Scott Smith; and six grandchildren.
His children would like to say they love him very much and congratulations on your retirement.
