Checotah’s Faye Bundy reaches milestone

— Faye Bateman Bundy was born Jan. 11, 1913, in a two-story house which still stands in what is now called Shepard Estates in Pierce.

At 4, Faye followed her older siblings, Dick and Jessie Lee, to the little one-room schoolhouse called Snow Drop, which had been built at the far corner of their yard.

Faye says she always loved school and could not have been kept away.

At Faye’s high school graduation during the great depression her father, Lee Bateman, sold one of his best cows and received $7. With this money he bought her graduation ring.

At 17, she attended Connors Agricultural College in Warner for one year. At 18, she began  her teaching career at Pierce High School teaching third grade. Each summer her education continued at Northeastern State Teachers College in Tahlequah where she earned her bachelor and eventually her master’s degree in education.

In 1936 Faye married Edgar Luther Bundy.

They established themselves in the Pierce area where he raised cattle and built their home in 1947.

Past students still come to call at Checotah Nursing Center, which is now her home.

She will celebrate her 100th birthday on Friday and is proud to cross the same unique milestone as her mother, Bonnie Lee (Pipkins) Bateman, who also attained 100 years of age.
